The 1990- 1991 season proved to be a great year for the manager, Dave Bassett, prolific striker, Brain Deane and Sheffield United football club. After an awful start to the season, the club found themselves rock bottom of the first division by Christmas, however the Blades were in championship winning form after the new year and went on a magnificent seven match run of winning all there matches, and the club finished the season off in a comfortable 13th place, if it was not for the poor start, they would have finished a lot higher. Brian Deane scored 20 goals for the club, in turn earning himself a call up into the England squad. Carl Bradshaw, David Barnes and Paul Stancliffe were all outstanding for the club through out the campaign.
The 1991-92 season saw a further improvement in the Blades performances as they were outstanding in the top flight, finishing the season off in 9th place, establishing themselves as a top flight club. Once again, Brian Deane was outstanding in front of goal. The Blades put on a good show in the FA Cup, narrowly losing against Chelsea in the fifth round by 1-0.
The 1992-1993 season saw the introduction of the ‘premiership.’ Brain Deane scored the first ever premiership goal in an encounter with Manchester united, after 5 minutes in the match. The Blades competed well in the premier league, finishing the season off in a respectable 14th position. The pleasure of their campaign came from a fine run in the FA Cup, reaching the semi finals, losing the Sheffield derby against Sheffield Wednesday 2-1.
The 1993-1994 campaign witnessed the Blades struggling for form in the top flight and they finished the season off in 20th position, in turn relegating the club in to the second division. Alan Kelly was one of the very few pluses to emerge from their campaign. The Blades lost against future cup winners, Manchester united in the third round of the FA cup.
